Right & Wrong

Often, things apparently sounding very simple can become very complex when trying to actually explain.

What is right & what is wrong?

One can argue that whatever morally correct is right and the otherwise is wrong. It sounds good, but when delving a little deeper into the subject, things become convoluted. The term morality, in itself can lead you to labyrinth of many opinions where everyone can have their own perspective of it and thereby sending you to an endless loop.

Human beings, coming from different socio economic classes, different geographical barriers have their own perspective for what is morally right or what is morally wrong. Even for an individual, definition of right and wrong keeps on changing with time. Someone, brought up with certain inculcated values accepted as righteous may find it completely otherwise in the course of his journey called life.  Then again, the question arises, who’ll decide the acceptability of his or her findings. If the answer is, it is the individual who has to decide, then it can be argued that who’ll decide that his acceptability of the findings is actually morally right as per the society he or she living in?

Similarly, when a mass of people uphold a belief / decision, does that justifies being the right act performed? Who’ll decide? We all are very much aware, what mass hysteria can lead to.

It is not much different, when it comes to democratically electing representatives, who’ll decide the fate of millions in the Assembly or Parliament.  Manipulative politicians often justify their wrongdoings in the pretext of they are being elected by the masses. Supposedly, a candidate got 6 out of 10 votes in an election to get elected. That means, 40% of the voters preferred to go against the candidate.  Still, since the candidate got 60% of the vote and therefore, by virtue of democracy he /she is empowered to decide upon the fate of his / her constituency. Now, if the politician is manipulative enough to engineer those 60% votes in his / her favour, isn’t the whole issue gets convoluted over morally right and wrong?

Hit by protest against implementation of Citizens Amendment Bill (Citizens Amendment Act, now), West Bengal is writhing. Daily life has become immobile and the role of states’ administrative machineries has become questionable. Be it Rail & Road blockade, brainless destruction of public property or setting fire to trains & busses,    all sorts of vandalism are being showcased in different pockets of the state in the name of protest and instead of taking stern actions against those, state administration watching over as mere spectators is bound to raise eyebrows. A Memoir of Murshidabad –Bengal’s Bygone Historical Epoch

While planning for our Puja vacation, our mind started wandering. It was primarily because we have not made any significant peregrination for long enough and also because of the fact that deliberating on a tour itself always is an energizer for a thirsty soul willing to run away from the hustle and bustle of city dwelling.
