Dichotomy

A couple of radio commercials are on air these days which are very interesting in the context of their content and with respect to the present social atmosphere around. One of them describing through the voice of a girl child, the good deeds of present BJP led Government and how it has changed the country to a happy one! The second one, on the other hand, is requesting citizens through various celebrities, about anger management. It’s very rhetorical in the context that there is a palpable feeling of irate amongst the citizens which are being vented out often in various shapes. From the ruckus amongst local train passengers to the quarrel of neighbourhood, everyone seems to be perturbed, angst, frustrated and unhappy. More often than not, this kind of ruckus including personal vendetta is being flagged with political patronization. When BJP came into power, they traded dream of a utopian India. People of India, with a view to change for better future, entrusted their full support t...

Carcass Industry

“Necessity is the mother of invention”- might sound cliché but couldn’t find any apt reference describing the shocking revelation of carcass meat supply scandal. Bengal has seen famine in between 1769 - 1773 (1176-1180 in Bengali Calendar), but even then when almost one third of Bengals population got starved to death and people literally became omnivorous, couldn’t consume carcass meat. That was pre-independence era and we are talking of 70 years post independence when Bengal proclaims its growth in every facet. Had this scandal not revealed, we would have been in complete dark about this heinous nexus operating well over a decade and spread even across the border of the state. I still cannot comprehend that what degree of unscrupulousness give birth to people who can even contemplate of doing what they have done.   On the other hand, it is hard to believe that without the active help and support from the politicians and administration this nexus was operative for so many...

Girl Child & Prowling Predators

Sometime, scribbling remonstrance to express reproach against even the ghastliest incident is much harder than one can think. A melange of grief, pain and abhorrence created a veil on my inner feeling, so much so, that whenever I tried to pen down my thoughts against the Kathua rape and murder, all of my emotions got jumbled up & disarrayed me completely. Even the word barbaric will get ashamed of the act of those creatures (I am consciously using the word ‘creature’ instead of human), who have done such diabolical act. Atrocities against girl child and women are serious cause of concern for our society, but the most alarming fact is the increasing brutality which is getting associated with these kinds of incidents.   2012 Delhi ‘Nirbhaya’ incident shock the nation with its nature of brutality, where even a juvenile was part of the crime. The convicts got their due punishment and the laws were made more stringent to keep leash on such incidents, but record reveals that...

Might is Right

Winning an election poll cannot be synonymous with significant attainment of great work done by politicians or their respective associations, influencing people in such a way that there deed will be commemorated by future generations also. It is not so simple, albeit our politicians are relentless in trying making us believe so. With self propaganda to its extreme and backed by numerous pet media around, more often than not people tends to fall prey to their trap. But history, no matter how unscrupulously depicted, will reveal the truth ruthlessly and hit people’s life for the misdeed done by their predecessor.   While leading to Panchayat Election 2018, West Bengal is witnessing series of incidents, which can only be compared to Avengers: Infinity War. Jokes apart, the prevalent conditions are far from cinematic. The court of law has to prod almost every administrative decision. It is no exception in case of Panchayat Elections date of Filing nominations and date of polli...

West Bengal & its Political Peril

[“Truth is not determined by majority vote - Doug Gwyn”]   Bengal has always took pride for its political awareness and quite rightly so. Historically, politicians from Bengal were always been cerebral and were driven by ideologies. Even in the pre-independence era, though the perspective of politics was completely different, one can remember the unforgettable remark of Gopal Krishna Gokhale “What Bengal thinks today, India thinks tomorrow”.   Astute politicians from Bengal have stood over time and justified the quote of Gokhale time and again.   But, a long time has elapsed since then and many a tide has subsided from river Hooghly, politics has certainly changed its definition in Bengal. Even after acknowledging the fact that the word “Politics” is vastly meaningful, one must admit that its ultimate objective in a democracy is to make peoples life better in every possible way with ideologies of the party in authority. Easier said than done, as can be seen i...

The Disgraced Trio

The ball tampering scandal which unfolded during and after the third test match in Cape Town played between visitors Australia and the host South Africa is going to leave its scar for long in the history of cricket. While legends of the game are trying their every bit to spread the game across the globe, incidents like these are undesirable and condemnable.   Like any field in life, if your integrity and accountability becomes questionable, it begets disgrace for you and the people associated to you. In this case, unfortunately, the act of Smith (Steve), Warner (David) and Bancroft (Cameron) has not only tainted their own image but also brought about defame to Australian Cricket.   The cricketing fraternity is highly respectful the way Australians play their cricket. Their ruthless aggression to win a cricket match is highly regarded as “The Aussie Way”.   Though, we have seen in the past that often their aggression can go over the top and create controversies. Bu...

Piyali Island – Your Weekend Jaunt

More often than not, whenever we contemplate about taking a break from routine city life, our mind starts wandering about destinations pretty common to all of us.   While discussing a jaunt on a fall winter weekend amongst friends, the onus was upon me to find out a place which is close by, beautiful yet not very commonly known to masses. Instantly, the name of Piyali Island popped up in my mind.   Earlier, somewhere I’ve heard of the place but never happened to be there.   However, I’ve started scouring in the internet as well as amongst people who might be aware about it. From the internet, I got desired information to be able to put up to my association. Most of the people I asked though told me about the picnic spot Piyali which is en route to Canning, 24 Parganas (S). But, since I knew that what I was looking for I didn’t pay any heed to it.   Four of friends, including me decided to take up the excursion on Sunday, 21 st January 2018 by local t...

Indians and Bank Robbers

Sensible Indians often rue the fact that invaders from prehistoric times have plundered our precious belongings while ravaging our heritage keeping long and imperishable impact in our country’s soul.   Our ancestors gave their blood and sweat towards making this country free from foreign rulers and making it a better place for living for us.   Alas! They never had dreamt of this breed of ostensible Indians, mastering the craft of fleecing fellow countrymen, else they’d have got dejected with the current scenario.     Financial frauds are not new to India. The largest being   when government owned UCO bank was found to defrauded $3.2 billion (More than Rs.20,000   Crore).     The act of Nirav Modi, his uncle and ally Mehul Choksi, along with some devious bank employees of Punjab National Bank have scored the second largest financial scam in the country.   The PNB is the second largest money lender in the country and yet the wa...
