2020 – A Monologue

I am not a historian. Neither is a literary nor an intellect. What I feel as a common man, I tend to pen down and keep a log of things as I see from my point of view. I see it as a scribble of my thoughts on paper.

2020 started like any normal year previous to this but who knew things will take such swing in mid March. Corona virus aka COVID-19 and its spreading wave shook the Globe. Imposition of lock-down changed the whole scenario in India. Aimed to protect our country from spreading of Covid attack, this lock-down turned the table on its head.   How, the lock-down impacted life of commons is truly unthinkable. Whether corona got restricted or not is highly debatable, but one thing is for sure, improvidence in implementing lock-down cost more lives than corona did. In a country like India, where economic imbalance is strikingly palpable, imposing lock-down brought about curse on thousands and Lakhs of Indians, mostly daily wagers, or small time workers lost their jobs. Their life, already by no stretch of imagination was tough to live, made even harder to face hunger & health issues.

As for our state, aids and medication from Government was not sufficient and on top of that reaching out to needy hands did stumble thanks to long practised middleman system. On and on, no matter the intent, effectiveness of lock-down was counterproductive. Having said that, it is undeniable that our fellow countrymen were also very lackadaisical in observing the basic guidelines lay down by administration. Political traders, for their own vested interest, overruled anti pandemic safety measures to organise rampant rallies and public gatherings and thereby making the issue even complicated. However, with the advent of vaccines by year end, at one hand people were sighing relief, on the other hand becoming more and more careless. The largest democracy in the world fighting the biggest pandemic of 21st century, also showcased non-transparent distribution module, where commitment and performance are like two rails of a railway track, never meet each other.

Amidst of all these, there came the 2nd wave, as predicted by the experts, taken us completely off-guard. Although, warned well ahead, no one paid heed to it. What resulted!! More casualties & catastrophe. Inadequate health infrastructure, sagging economy due to lock-down, people do not know what to do. Be it State or Centre, Governments allegiance seems to be more for their own political benefit rather than peoples well being. Large section of people became jobless by mid 2021, adding to the woes of unemployment ratio of our country. It is amazement that how, an unprecedented situation like COVID can bring a country, boasted as upcoming economic superpower in the start of year 2020, reeling with joblessness and inadequate health infrastructure.

While we are standing in the middle of 2021, a 3rd wave of COVID is being forecasted, which is supposed to hit our society by October’2021. These are hard times and we need to be at our best to sail this tide over.

Piyali Island – Your Weekend Jaunt

More often than not, whenever we contemplate about taking a break from routine city life, our mind starts wandering about destinations pretty common to all of us.   While discussing a jaunt on a fall winter weekend amongst friends, the onus was upon me to find out a place which is close by, beautiful yet not very commonly known to masses. Instantly, the name of Piyali Island popped up in my mind.   Earlier, somewhere I’ve heard of the place but never happened to be there.   However, I’ve started scouring in the internet as well as amongst people who might be aware about it. From the internet, I got desired information to be able to put up to my association. Most of the people I asked though told me about the picnic spot Piyali which is en route to Canning, 24 Parganas (S). But, since I knew that what I was looking for I didn’t pay any heed to it.   Four of friends, including me decided to take up the excursion on Sunday, 21 st January 2018 by local t...

CAA-The Black Spot

Hit by protest against implementation of Citizens Amendment Bill (Citizens Amendment Act, now), West Bengal is writhing. Daily life has become immobile and the role of states’ administrative machineries has become questionable. Be it Rail & Road blockade, brainless destruction of public property or setting fire to trains & busses,    all sorts of vandalism are being showcased in different pockets of the state in the name of protest and instead of taking stern actions against those, state administration watching over as mere spectators is bound to raise eyebrows. If you interpret, after reading up to this point that I’m advocating in favour of this Act and thus voicing against protesters, it will be half truth. Problem with public pandemonium is that very easily sentiments take over from logic. Unfortunately, political intolerance in our country, across all party lines has become such that criticism is interpreted as opposition. CAA itself is deplorable since it direct...

A Memoir of Murshidabad –Bengal’s Bygone Historical Epoch

While planning for our Puja vacation, our mind started wandering. It was primarily because we have not made any significant peregrination for long enough and also because of the fact that deliberating on a tour itself always is an energizer for a thirsty soul willing to run away from the hustle and bustle of city dwelling. Time space was not enough for a long trip yet not very short one also.  We had got 5 days for our tour. After a lot of argumentation and deliberation between two of us, brothers, as to where to head for, we have decided to visit Murshidabad. The reason propelling our decision apart from its being a historical city, which we were contemplating to visit, we have had a nostalgic connection to this place. Our father spent his childhood days in Murshidabad. He used to narrate stories of the place and those narratives left some delightful impression of Murshidabad in our childhood days which we wanted to relieve. We boarded Bhagirathi Express from Sealdah on ...
