Bengal's Apathy to a Cricket Prodigy

Another edition (10th) of IPL has passed by. Mumbai Indians won the coveted trophy deservingly. Our very own Kolkata Knight Riders failed to rise to our expectations. We, Calcuttans are lamenting, naturally. Afterall, we are sports loving fraternity and when it comes to cricket, our passion goes overboard. When cricket conjugates with Bollywood, especially a star as big as Mr. Shah Rukh Khan, the whole scenario becomes frenzied.

Unfortunately, achievements by a Bengal Tigress, in the field of sports, with its aura spread across global platform got eclipsed in this frenzy. The journey of Jhulan Goswami, a simple Bengali Girl from a very humble background to the pinnacle of world of cricket is simply outstanding and deserves special accolades. It is more so, as anyone associated with our society will admit what an uphill task it is to pursue a dream as expensive as playing cricket, specially being a woman. Thousands of hindrances fangs out and creates innumerable hurdles on the way. Beyond cricketing excellence one has to continuously confront this battle outside the cricket field in their daily life. Achieving what Jhulan has achieved is really special and no word of praise is enough for her.

We all know, beside the Brand Ambassador of West Bengal, Mr. Shah Rukh Khan is a sports lover himself too. Though it is only during IPL season, he becomes a regular flyer to Kolkata, unlike rest of the year, when he is hardly to be seen around, except promoting his movies.  We expected him, as a sports loving personality as he is and being brand ambassador of Bengal, to reach out to Jhulan with acknowledgement of her feat. But sadly enough, it didn’t happen. Maybe he was too busy in his schedule or ruing the defeat of his franchise, but no one from his team has stepped forward showing the gesture to communicate to Jhulan on his franchise’s behalf, at least publicly.  We, the natives of Bengal have high expectations from a man of his stature and we felt dejected by this whole episode. On the other hand, the role of our state governments can also be questioned. Government organises special ceremony for the IPL win of a franchise team but remains mum on the achievement of Jhulan. We preach for equal rights of girl child in our society but don’t lend our hand to pat them when they achieve. Hope, our honourable Chief Minster will surely deliberate on this.

Piyali Island – Your Weekend Jaunt

More often than not, whenever we contemplate about taking a break from routine city life, our mind starts wandering about destinations pretty common to all of us.   While discussing a jaunt on a fall winter weekend amongst friends, the onus was upon me to find out a place which is close by, beautiful yet not very commonly known to masses. Instantly, the name of Piyali Island popped up in my mind.   Earlier, somewhere I’ve heard of the place but never happened to be there.   However, I’ve started scouring in the internet as well as amongst people who might be aware about it. From the internet, I got desired information to be able to put up to my association. Most of the people I asked though told me about the picnic spot Piyali which is en route to Canning, 24 Parganas (S). But, since I knew that what I was looking for I didn’t pay any heed to it.   Four of friends, including me decided to take up the excursion on Sunday, 21 st January 2018 by local t...

Henry's Island - Getaway Next Door

We are living in an era when our over dependence on technology touching new heights every day.   In every facet of life, we fall back on our gadgets. Thus, acquiring information related to tour and travel is no exception.   Instead of exploring beyond regular and redundant, be it for visit to places of interests or for that matter just a weekend jaunt, we start scouring internet. Often, searches yields places very popular and beautiful, yet sometimes it can overlook beautiful places normally unexplored. This Holi (festival of color), it was an unpremeditated trip to Bakkhali, which ended up being at Henry’s Island, nearby Bakhkhali. Those, who are not acquainted with the name ‘Bakkhali’, it is a beach village in the southern fringe of West Bengal, State of India and the district being South 24 Parganas. Shortest distance from Kolkata to Bakkhali is 125 km ( Diamond Harbour Road {NH 12},   via   Sirakole – Usthi – Netra). If you take a detour v...

A Memoir of Murshidabad –Bengal’s Bygone Historical Epoch

While planning for our Puja vacation, our mind started wandering. It was primarily because we have not made any significant peregrination for long enough and also because of the fact that deliberating on a tour itself always is an energizer for a thirsty soul willing to run away from the hustle and bustle of city dwelling. Time space was not enough for a long trip yet not very short one also.  We had got 5 days for our tour. After a lot of argumentation and deliberation between two of us, brothers, as to where to head for, we have decided to visit Murshidabad. The reason propelling our decision apart from its being a historical city, which we were contemplating to visit, we have had a nostalgic connection to this place. Our father spent his childhood days in Murshidabad. He used to narrate stories of the place and those narratives left some delightful impression of Murshidabad in our childhood days which we wanted to relieve. We boarded Bhagirathi Express from Sealdah on ...
