71st Independence - A Thought By A Common Indian

Proud Indians, as we are, celebrated our 71st Independence Day. Upholding the tricolour of largest democracy on earth for 70 long years and continue to do so, really speaks for our culture, heritage and most importantly values imbibed by our ancestors. While ‘celebrating’ this Independence Day, we must not forget the toiling that has been put into for the cause. So, the onus is onto us to carry the heritage forward to our generation next.

Democracy, with all its limitations, is a process in itself, incessant practise of which keeps it refining with passing time. India, from the country that ravaged by the British rule for two hundred years to become a country of reckoning power in world today has voyaged considerably. During this course though, we have faced numerous snags but we kept on marching.  The Brits, while leaving our land, planted a poison tree called communalism and the fruit it yielded was Pakistan. Thousands of families became homeless and gutted during partition followed by unprecedented genocide. The Brits, however, cannot be held solely responsible for their did as they may have planted the seeds of the poison tree but the gardeners who nurtured and put it to full bloom were our fellow countrymen turned  politicians with their vested interest. Enough blood and tears have been shed over the ordeal and time with its greatest gift of healing made us get over it.

The serpent of communalism since tried several times to spread its fang but thanks to our sense of pluralism inculcated deep into our root, good sense always prevailed. But we must remember, there won’t be any stopping of recurrence of communal violence, if we collectively don’t repress it. Vindictive forces with acrimonious thoughts often trying to drive away people from the real problems like unemployment or health issues and instigations are in galore with communal provocative propaganda. These thoughts are being easily fuelled by the abundance of social media where instant comments and reactions are making scenario more perilous. A country as vast as ours, where we take great pride at our state of ‘Unity in Diversity’ having completed the journey of 70 years of democracy, it gives great pain if genocide happens in the name of religion. Unfortunately enough, count of this phenomenon is still aplenty. It only shows that even after 70 years of achieving and practising our democracy, as a nation we are still in our juvenile stage.

Our ancestors fought hard to achieve freedom from the British and our soldiers are fighting to secure our borders from enemies across borders. We, civilians are a greater battle in our hand and that is to fight these communal forces trying to divide us.

If we aspire to achieve the successful meaning of democracy and become the forerunner in every sphere, we need to beat the demon of communalism collectively and step ahead resolutely.

Mithun Chakraborty – Bengal’s one & only universal DADA (Big Brother)

When the announcement for Shri Mithun Chakraborty’s news of being nominated for Dadasaheb  Phalke Award for his iconic contribution to Indian Cinema made public, being a Bengali and an ardent fan of the legendary actor, my first reaction was that no one could have been a better flag bearer as a human being to bring back golden days of Bengali Cinema. As announced by I&B Broadcasting Ministry of India on 30 th September 2024, the award was scheduled to be presented on 70 th National Film Awards Ceremony on 8 th October 2024. In middle and lower middle class Bengali community, the word ‘DADA’ , means big brother is uttered with great respect. Mithunda is a person, who earned this respect across the strata of the society and age barrier by his sheer integrity, hard work and humbleness. Today, Mithunda, is not only a film actor, anchor etc, but we look upto him as a brand for every facet of life beyond barrier of merely film acting only. Already, he has earned his respect pan ...

Piyali Island – Your Weekend Jaunt

More often than not, whenever we contemplate about taking a break from routine city life, our mind starts wandering about destinations pretty common to all of us.   While discussing a jaunt on a fall winter weekend amongst friends, the onus was upon me to find out a place which is close by, beautiful yet not very commonly known to masses. Instantly, the name of Piyali Island popped up in my mind.   Earlier, somewhere I’ve heard of the place but never happened to be there.   However, I’ve started scouring in the internet as well as amongst people who might be aware about it. From the internet, I got desired information to be able to put up to my association. Most of the people I asked though told me about the picnic spot Piyali which is en route to Canning, 24 Parganas (S). But, since I knew that what I was looking for I didn’t pay any heed to it.   Four of friends, including me decided to take up the excursion on Sunday, 21 st January 2018 by local t...

Ignoring Legacy - Bengal Trending

It seems that using quotes from yesteryears eminent literary and poets, and use it in distorted way have become a fashion these days in West Bengal. From Rabindranath to Jibanananda, quotes are being indiscriminately used modifying their original version, partly or fully and incorporating new phrasing to the will of the presenter, be it for the advertisement for renowned real estate company or by individuals. It is, thereby, more often than not, brings about meanings which have no distant connection of inner meaning with its original version.     We are living in an era, where reading of books & periodicals in an old fashioned way has become almost outdated and it has become and becoming more and more through Smartphone etc.   Old style local libraries have become oblivious. I doubt, people, who are unaware of originality of those prose and poems might consider these distorted versions as the original one, since the submitter of these versions merely acknowledge t...
