S.O.S - Reconcile with Mother Nature

With technological excellence, human race is scaling new heights and making life more comfortable. Advocators of technology always vocal about proving their point on how technology keep bringing revolutionary improvement in our livelihood for betterment, which is quite true, but on the flip side what they tend to envelop, willingly or unwillingly, is the fact that every day we are endangering ours own existence by way of marginalizing  natures balance. It is not about how a handful of technological freak advocates and conquers the battle of words, it is about billions of people or rather as we put it these days, “consumers” enslaving themselves by following propaganda orchestrated by those. Although mostly, but not all of these followers are having dearth of information about the hidden danger that are associated, but they fail to transform those information into knowledge until catastrophe happens and they left ruined with only hindsight. It is also true that for consumers it is like chain reaction, everyone gets more influenced or sometimes egoistical to consume things by looking to their immediate upper rung or their close circles. Ego, rather than logic or real need prevails.

From our childhood days, we are taught to protect our environment and we do exactly the opposite as grownups.  We destroy environment in every step of our life and call it technological advancement. It is better for so called uncivilized tribes, who at least keep camaraderie with nature where they live.  The term ‘Global Warming’ has become more of a fashionable point of discussion around, without could even apprehend the magnitude of danger it heralds.

On 4th February this year, a report published by International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development, explained avidly, the danger Global Warming begets with it. According to the report, two thirds of Himalayan glaciers could melt by 2100 if global warming continues. Such a catastrophe can completely disrupt the flow of rivers in eight Asian countries including China and India. If such thing happens, 250 million peoples habitat in the mountain along with another 1.65 billion others who live in the river valleys below will be directly affected. It means that the source of water for drinking, irrigation and all other purposes will completely get destroyed.  “This is the climate crisis you haven’t heard of,” said Phillipus Wester, a scientist with the International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development.

According to the report, the region is known as the “Third Pole” for its huge store of ice. After Antarctica & Greenland, inevitably this place is also threatened by human kindled climate change.

Prepared over a period of 5 years extensive study & research by more than 350 researchers emphasized and alarmed about the steady retreat of ice  from the glaciers of this area since 1970, when Global Warming first set in.

If this trend keeps as it is prevailing, planet earth will left barren without life and technology cannot save us.

“We need to start thinking of mountain regions as climate hotspots worthy of urgent attention, investments and solutions,” concluded Dasho Rinzin Dorji of Bhutan, a board member.

Mithun Chakraborty – Bengal’s one & only universal DADA (Big Brother)

When the announcement for Shri Mithun Chakraborty’s news of being nominated for Dadasaheb  Phalke Award for his iconic contribution to Indian Cinema made public, being a Bengali and an ardent fan of the legendary actor, my first reaction was that no one could have been a better flag bearer as a human being to bring back golden days of Bengali Cinema. As announced by I&B Broadcasting Ministry of India on 30 th September 2024, the award was scheduled to be presented on 70 th National Film Awards Ceremony on 8 th October 2024. In middle and lower middle class Bengali community, the word ‘DADA’ , means big brother is uttered with great respect. Mithunda is a person, who earned this respect across the strata of the society and age barrier by his sheer integrity, hard work and humbleness. Today, Mithunda, is not only a film actor, anchor etc, but we look upto him as a brand for every facet of life beyond barrier of merely film acting only. Already, he has earned his respect pan ...

Piyali Island – Your Weekend Jaunt

More often than not, whenever we contemplate about taking a break from routine city life, our mind starts wandering about destinations pretty common to all of us.   While discussing a jaunt on a fall winter weekend amongst friends, the onus was upon me to find out a place which is close by, beautiful yet not very commonly known to masses. Instantly, the name of Piyali Island popped up in my mind.   Earlier, somewhere I’ve heard of the place but never happened to be there.   However, I’ve started scouring in the internet as well as amongst people who might be aware about it. From the internet, I got desired information to be able to put up to my association. Most of the people I asked though told me about the picnic spot Piyali which is en route to Canning, 24 Parganas (S). But, since I knew that what I was looking for I didn’t pay any heed to it.   Four of friends, including me decided to take up the excursion on Sunday, 21 st January 2018 by local t...

Ignoring Legacy - Bengal Trending

It seems that using quotes from yesteryears eminent literary and poets, and use it in distorted way have become a fashion these days in West Bengal. From Rabindranath to Jibanananda, quotes are being indiscriminately used modifying their original version, partly or fully and incorporating new phrasing to the will of the presenter, be it for the advertisement for renowned real estate company or by individuals. It is, thereby, more often than not, brings about meanings which have no distant connection of inner meaning with its original version.     We are living in an era, where reading of books & periodicals in an old fashioned way has become almost outdated and it has become and becoming more and more through Smartphone etc.   Old style local libraries have become oblivious. I doubt, people, who are unaware of originality of those prose and poems might consider these distorted versions as the original one, since the submitter of these versions merely acknowledge t...
