Bengal's Cat(astrophe) Connection

What is common in Bengalis’ with Cats? Sure you read me correct; but it is not the big cats which are being referred here, comparison with which often used metaphorically to glorify The Bengali ethnicity. What is being referred here is about their similarity to the characteristics of domestic pet cats. Both of them are very much fond of their homey comfort and hardly prefer to venture out, or lazy if someone wants to put it bluntly.   This laziness is so much so that notwithstanding their persistent backtracking in every sphere of life, be it cultural, social, artistic or intellectual prowess, from the renaissance period (nineteenth century to early twentieth century), arguably the best period of Bengal’s history, Bengalis prefers to bask on the past glory with a feel of content.              We often refer our predecessor’s days and belch ‘those were the days’, as if it was utopia then and every great soul had l...

A Memoir of Murshidabad –Bengal’s Bygone Historical Epoch

While planning for our Puja vacation, our mind started wandering. It was primarily because we have not made any significant peregrination for long enough and also because of the fact that deliberating on a tour itself always is an energizer for a thirsty soul willing to run away from the hustle and bustle of city dwelling. Time space was not enough for a long trip yet not very short one also.  We had got 5 days for our tour. After a lot of argumentation and deliberation between two of us, brothers, as to where to head for, we have decided to visit Murshidabad. The reason propelling our decision apart from its being a historical city, which we were contemplating to visit, we have had a nostalgic connection to this place. Our father spent his childhood days in Murshidabad. He used to narrate stories of the place and those narratives left some delightful impression of Murshidabad in our childhood days which we wanted to relieve. We boarded Bhagirathi Express from Sealdah on ...

U-17 Soccer World Cup & Dreams Beyond

While commencement of under-17 soccer world cup is in the corner, Indian Football fraternity is all gearing up for the mega event. It is such a gala event not only for India but for all football playing nation across the globe that all attention related to the event are going to converge upon us, if not already happened, as to how we are going to deal with it. It is such a pleasure to see India as organizer of events of such magnitude and All India Football Federation can certainly deserve accolades for that. Barring handful, football fans across the country was long rueing the fact that they have been deprived of firsthand experience of world class soccer.  It is not very long that with globalisation and media boom, people are being able to make feast of football bonanza across the globe by watching it on television or internet and-so-forth.  A country which craves its love for football since 1893, pre-independence era, and where victory of local soccer team over their ...

71st Independence - A Thought By A Common Indian

Proud Indians, as we are, celebrated our 71 st Independence Day. Upholding the tricolour of largest democracy on earth for 70 long years and continue to do so, really speaks for our culture, heritage and most importantly values imbibed by our ancestors. While ‘celebrating’ this Independence Day, we must not forget the toiling that has been put into for the cause. So, the onus is onto us to carry the heritage forward to our generation next. Democracy, with all its limitations, is a process in itself, incessant practise of which keeps it refining with passing time. India, from the country that ravaged by the British rule for two hundred years to become a country of reckoning power in world today has voyaged considerably. During this course though, we have faced numerous snags but we kept on marching.  The Brits, while leaving our land, planted a poison tree called communalism and the fruit it yielded was Pakistan. Thousands of families became homeless and gutted during partiti...

Bengal's Apathy to a Cricket Prodigy

Another edition (10 th ) of IPL has passed by. Mumbai Indians won the coveted trophy deservingly. Our very own Kolkata Knight Riders failed to rise to our expectations. We, Calcuttans are lamenting, naturally. Afterall, we are sports loving fraternity and when it comes to cricket, our passion goes overboard. When cricket conjugates with Bollywood, especially a star as big as Mr. Shah Rukh Khan, the whole scenario becomes frenzied. Unfortunately, achievements by a Bengal Tigress, in the field of sports, with its aura spread across global platform got eclipsed in this frenzy. The journey of Jhulan Goswami, a simple Bengali Girl from a very humble background to the pinnacle of world of cricket is simply outstanding and deserves special accolades. It is more so, as anyone associated with our society will admit what an uphill task it is to pursue a dream as expensive as playing cricket, specially being a woman. Thousands of hindrances fangs out and creates innumerable hurdles on the w...

Perilous Job Market of My City

As far as prospect of respectable job is concerned, Calcutta is seriously having a dearth of it. By respectable job, it may be interpreted as, jobs, which can earn you your bread, while you apply your level of calibre. On the other hand, employers often find themselves in a situation, where they find it hard to track down eligible and worthy candidate for their requirement. It may sound paradoxical, but a detail assessment of the situation will reveal that, there are many reasons, like lesser number jobs with regard to eligible candidate or sometimes it is more a case of overestimation on one’s part about their propriety which leads to failure of finding each other. It is another case that the cream of the crop is running away, towards more lucrative carrier in other States, since those top notch employers are ambivalent to turn up to our State.  But this article though, is not about discussing these issues, since there are many wise men capable of discussing upon these issue...
