Bengal's Apathy to a Cricket Prodigy

Another edition (10 th ) of IPL has passed by. Mumbai Indians won the coveted trophy deservingly. Our very own Kolkata Knight Riders failed to rise to our expectations. We, Calcuttans are lamenting, naturally. Afterall, we are sports loving fraternity and when it comes to cricket, our passion goes overboard. When cricket conjugates with Bollywood, especially a star as big as Mr. Shah Rukh Khan, the whole scenario becomes frenzied. Unfortunately, achievements by a Bengal Tigress, in the field of sports, with its aura spread across global platform got eclipsed in this frenzy. The journey of Jhulan Goswami, a simple Bengali Girl from a very humble background to the pinnacle of world of cricket is simply outstanding and deserves special accolades. It is more so, as anyone associated with our society will admit what an uphill task it is to pursue a dream as expensive as playing cricket, specially being a woman. Thousands of hindrances fangs out and creates innumerable hurdles on the w...

Perilous Job Market of My City

As far as prospect of respectable job is concerned, Calcutta is seriously having a dearth of it. By respectable job, it may be interpreted as, jobs, which can earn you your bread, while you apply your level of calibre. On the other hand, employers often find themselves in a situation, where they find it hard to track down eligible and worthy candidate for their requirement. It may sound paradoxical, but a detail assessment of the situation will reveal that, there are many reasons, like lesser number jobs with regard to eligible candidate or sometimes it is more a case of overestimation on one’s part about their propriety which leads to failure of finding each other. It is another case that the cream of the crop is running away, towards more lucrative carrier in other States, since those top notch employers are ambivalent to turn up to our State.  But this article though, is not about discussing these issues, since there are many wise men capable of discussing upon these issue...

Demonetisation Vs. Discoordination

The decision of demonetisation of Rs.1,000 & Rs.500 by the Government of India, in order to fight corruption, black money and cross border terrorism issues and its impact on Indian economy has become the talk of the town for the last few days and rightly so. Some are airing their voice for the move and few are against the move. Let the debate go on beyond the petty political agendas and their flag bearers across the country. But what made me to scribble my thought in this blog is the observation of uncontrolled frenzy and consequent ruckus which is occurring around amongst the people, in spite of every measures taken by the authority, which meant to educate citizens about do’s and don’ts of this particular situation. Probably, every possible way has been ventured by the Government of India, be it electronic media, digital media, print media and so on, to communicate to the citizens that there is no need to get trepid about the situation, though the currencies (Rs.500 & Rs...

Right & Wrong

Often, things apparently sounding very simple can become very complex when trying to actually explain. What is right & what is wrong? One can argue that whatever morally correct is right and the otherwise is wrong. It sounds good, but when delving a little deeper into the subject, things become convoluted. The term morality, in itself can lead you to labyrinth of many opinions where everyone can have their own perspective of it and thereby sending you to an endless loop. Human beings, coming from different socio economic classes, different geographical barriers have their own perspective for what is morally right or what is morally wrong. Even for an individual, definition of right and wrong keeps on changing with time. Someone, brought up with certain inculcated values accepted as righteous may find it completely otherwise in the course of his journey called life.  Then again, the question arises, who’ll decide the acceptability of his or her findings. If the ans...

The Great Kolkatan Jamboree

Is it justifiable, even if a large number of people go frenzy over a Govt. sponsored accolade, on a working day in the middle of a city center? The city, which is also  happened to be the capital city of a state which is ever struggling to establish an exemplary work culture. Of course, one should not undermine the magnitude of the achievement and moreover its inspirational effect on the society, since primarily it was a govt. sponsored event and all the highest dignitaries were present on behalf of the govt. Kolkata Knight Riders aka KKR, a cricket franchise has won the Indian Premier League 7 aka IPL7 ! ! ! Detractors (!) even opine that, the whole idea of IPL is pure entertainment extravaganza, foiled by cricket, albeit, it is neither domestic nor international cricket tournament.  Now, is KKR a state team?  The answer is no. Are they or will they promote emerging Bengal cricketers? Apparently, both the answers seem to be negative. Are they bringi...

ANOTHER REPUBLIC DAY

I was contemplating a ‘Republic Day’ write-up and when started scribbling, while some facts gave me immense delight, some left me with dread dreams.   We have celebrated our 65 th  Republic Day this 26 th January, but as a commoner, while I feel proud of our country being deliberated as one of the super power in scientific brilliance, shown great augury in terms of economic reforms or achieving commendable improvement in plantation and farming, but my heart got infused with dismay, when I think, we have witnessed the assassination of people like ‘Mr. Davolkar’, who fought the war against superstition and black magic. Our head droops with shame when we see incidents like ‘Labhpur’, when we see killing of female feticide in this 21 st century. Distinctly, our country has been literally dichotomously divided and these two parts have become apparently inextricable.   As far as ‘celebrating’ Republic Day is concerned, I think it has become a festival or ‘anoth...

ANARCHISM

Practice of anarchism neither fetches any bliss nor any delectation for society. Unfortunately though, some political leaders in our country chairing authoritative posts and suppose to be the guide and mentor for their fellow countrymen, avow proudly of their being ‘Anarchist’. It is very deleterious for our society that people chairing responsible authoritative posts acts like rogue godfather. Being in the administrative authority demands patience, pragmatism, judicious approach and sensibility handling any social issue. But it is very disheartening that govt. authorities of Delhi led by ‘AAP’ demonstrating least of the qualities since last few days. Thing got worst, when the Delhi law minster ordered Police to raid private residences on suspicion of illicit activities and was not obliged.  He then, allegedly led a hostile mob and launched a midnight raid by himself barging into the residence of an African Lady (identified by the lady concerned).  Now, instead of ha...
